Split, a city on Croatia's Dalmatian coast, is famous for its beaches and the Diocletian's Palace, a fortress-like complex in the city center built in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Once composed of thousands of structures, the ruins today still include over 200 buildings. Within the white stone walls and courtyards, there are a cathedral, as well as numerous shops, bars, cafés, hotels, and residences.

Central Dalmatia is the most active and diverse part of Croatia, with exceptional islands, quiet harbors, rugged mountains, numerous castles, and an emerging culinary scene. It is also home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Diocletian's Palace in Split, the medieval city walls of Trogir, and the ancient field systems of the Stari Grad Plain on the island of Hvar.

The rugged 1500-meter-high Dinaric mountain range provides a sensational backdrop.
